Recently, my 4th grade students finished their self-portraits inspired by Chuck Close. They began the project by drawing their portrait free hand. After they were pleased with the basic outline of their self-portrait, students saw a brief
When the demonstration was finished, they began applying marker to their face and neck using Crayola's Multicultural Markers. When students completed their skin, they added color to their hair. They had the choice of adding any color scheme to their background and shoulders, and finished their project by using Crayola Thin Tip Markers for their facial features. They turned out amazing!
Kindergarten students just finished their own ceramic pendants necklaces.

Each student created a spiral pendant with clay.

After their pendants were fired in the kiln, students used turquoise, light green, and brown glaze to paint their pendants.

When the glaze fire was finished, students added yarn and beads to finish their necklaces.

BEAUTIFUL!
Its so cold.....

When will this snow stop?

2nd grade students created Ice Castles to accompany the extra snow West Michigan saw this season. Students drew the castles free hand and once they were pleased with their outline they traced their drawing with a black thin tip marker.

To make sure viewers knew their castles were made of ice, students thought to place snowflakes at the tops of their towers instead of the traditional flags; additionally, students created unique snowflakes falling from the sky for extra details.

With Crayola Colored Pencils, students used the cool colors to apply color and to give their castles more dimension students focused on adding shadows to the sides and bricks of their tower walls. These castles are as cool as ice!!
To begin this project, students drew their own mask, outlined their pencil with a black thin tip marker, added color with crayons, and then used scissors to cut the edge of their mask. After cutting their mask out, students were instructed to glue their mask to the center of a large piece of colored construction paper. When the glue was dry, students cut out their mask a second time. With the construction paper around the edge of their mask, and the help of a hole puncher, students finished their mask by adding yarn. Students struggled with the fringe technique at first, but once they mastered the skill they were unstoppable.

The artwork they created was inspired by the poetry book Behold the Bold Umbrellaphant written by Jack Prelutsky and illustrated by Carin Berger. Students drew their artwork free hand and finished them with Crayola Markers. Selected pieces of art were displayed on a large screen during a performance by the Grand Rapids Symphony for West Michigan's youth.
They drew the head and neck of their eagles free hand. After they had the outline of their eagles finished they traced their projects with a black thin felt tip marker. Using the Crayola Color Sticks students added color with gradation to show the appearance of shadows; they were especially careful in handling the color of the eagle's white feathers and the birch tree's trunk and branches. They did an incredible job!

Young 5 students created a waving snowboy or snowgirl with crayons and watercolor paint during the cold month of January. Students loved having the ability to chose whichever colors they wanted on their scarf, hat, and buttons, along with learning how to draw a snowman up close without three circles.

As an art teacher I am always experimenting with new material in hopes to find something that would be a great tool for my students. Mission accomplished! The product is Crayola Color Sticks. They are colored pencils without the wood and constant need of re-sharpening with the beloved handheld pencil sharpeners! They offer vibrant color on any construction paper or drawing paper. Their cost is higher then regular colored pencils of course but not having frustrated elementary students who can not seem to sharpen the colored pencils correctly is worth the price, in my opinion!

Above is a drawing that I created as an example for a special project I plan to do with a group of fifth graders who are studying white wolves.

I hope if you try color sticks with your students you find they love them as much as mine do!!
Inspired by the late James Rizzi, and many popular art blogs, 3rd grade students created their own Rizzi City with Permanent Marker and Crayola Colored Markers. Students drew the cityscape free hand and loved adding faces with the shapes of their building's windows. They discussed the difference between a window's reflection during the day versus the night and using different colors depicted the realistic effect stylistically. Students also loved not having to draw the perfect 5-point star for the night sky, and enjoyed adding smiles to their suns. The cityscapes look great!

I had my second grade students create monsters named Stewart (inspired by the main character in the children's book) or Susie (a female version of Stewart that I introduced through an example).
Many of my students mentioned to me that they loved their monsters and they could not believe that they created a monster that looks "as good" as the illustrations in the children's book. It also made me smile when I heard them discussing how much they enjoyed styling their monster's hair.

In the background students created spider web kingdoms which is referenced in the text.

The finished pieces of art are unique, colorful, and humorous. The best combination!
They loved being able to create the wire armature, stretch the nylon over the wire, and then added primer and paint to their sculptures. Students were allowed to use the primary colors, white, and black paint to finish their artwork; for a little extra punch students were given Silver Sharpie Markers to outline and add tiny details if they wished. It was a super project that will definitely be repeated in future years.
Art Prize in Grand Rapids, Michigan is INCREDIBLE! To have such an amazing ART event that brings great discussion and consideration to "What is art?" makes me exicted as an art educator and proud as a West Michigan native.
For the last three years I have seen this celebration of art continue to grow and each year I'm left more eager for the next.

I believe one day I will enter my own artwork into the competition, but for now as I'm focused on growing as an educator and building my portfolio, it is enough to be able to just spend two weeks each year recongizing ART!
First grade self-portraits are a great way to start a new school year!

My students were very eager to create portraits that resembled them in real life. The students did not use any aids in creating their self-portraits; I wanted to see their abilities with instructional drawing along with encourage each of them to not focus on perfection. For their background students repeated circles which began small and then grew larger and overlapped each other.

Through this project the first graders learned the true meaning of stylized and they now use the vocabulary during class discussions whether it be describing the art techniques used by an artist to create a masterpiece or new projects.
My students have always loved weaving projects. I've seen multiple art blogs share examples of projects that used a wire hanger as it's base because it already has a well formed hook to hang the finished work of art for presentation. This is a photo of a weaving project that was created by a 5th grade student with multicolored yarn. The lesson is great because no matter how large or small the diameter of the circle each student's work looks amazing once the yarn is wrapped around the rim and unused space inside the frame of the hanger.
For the last several summers I have had the good fortune to be a summer school mentor to middle school and high school students through Education 2020.

This summer along with being an ED2020 mentor I took advantage of an opportunity to teach Beginning Concepts in Commercial Arts.

Over the course of two weeks, I had four shortened session with students entering the 6th, 7th, or 8th grade.

The two main programs I introduced to the students during the sessions were Adobe Illustrator CS5 and Adobe Photoshop CS5.

Even though many of the students had never worked with the software before it was exciting to see how quickly they began to pick up the program's secrets and shortcuts. Here are a few of their favorite projects created during the different sessions.

The middle school students focused on learning how to manipulate digital photography and create works of art with a strong composition through the Adobe software.

I have personally enjoyed experimenting with the Adobe Design Premium programs on my own for a few years now and it made me happy to have the chance to expose adolescents to an art related field that they could pursue when deciding their career path in the years to come.

The students learned about the history of Commerical and Graphic Arts during the sessions and began to understand just how present these two career fields are in their life each day even down to the advertising designs in the magazines they love to read.

Using pages from magazines students created a paper pot with scotch tape and mod podge.

The students loved learning about how to recycle such a common item in their household and also reflected on the designs of the advertisements and layout of the articles in the magazines while they were folding their pages.

Many of the students found a favorite page and kept it safe in their pile to finish the rim of their pot with style.

The two weeks were full of fun, laughter, and learning about Commercial Arts. I couldn't have asked for better students and I hope I get the opportunity again next year to instruct Beginning Concepts in Commercial Arts.

This project is based off a "Where's Waldo?" concept that offers the students a chance to reflect on their interests and personality, along with drawing images that symbolize those traits. The project lends great to teaching the definition of a monochromatic color scheme and practicing several of the Principals of Design and Elements of Art.
The best part of this assignment though by far is the excitement during its development. The students are eager to show their classmates how they are progressing and ask them if they can locate certain items within their composition.
I frequently look at other art educator blogs and I always enjoy seeing images of the school wide art exhibits. A few months ago now the school system I instruct in had their annual K-12 student art exhibit. I would not say it is an elaborate affair but the students are pleased to see their artwork on display and their excitement makes the time spent coordinating the exhibit and its setup and take down worth it.

The felt monster project allows students to learn how to sew and stitch with yarn and embroidery thread while constructing their own unique stuffed creatures. The project is time consuming and can be frustrating; the students have to anticipate how their pieces of felt can be stitched together best. I suggested to many of my students that they take the time to really work out on paper how they want to create their monster form before they begin to cut and sew. Once the students began working on their monsters many of them found they loved to add beads while they were stitching their separate pieces of felt together. Personally, I love how the colored yarn and embroidery thread emphasis the hand sewn stitching. One student commented that seeing the stitching made him more proud of his work because he knew just how much time it took to sew each piece of felt on his monster; another student commented that the stitching was like a textured pencil line. (Hearing these comments made me smile ♥) All my students did an amazing job!! And this One Eyed, Blue Hair creature was given to me as a gift. How could I say no?
My second year teaching art is officially finished. In reflection, I can say through the highs and lows I LOVE TEACHING ART and I've been truly blessed and privileged to get the opportunity to work with the students, staff, and community I have. I can take pride in knowing I renewed many views on how important visual art is in each child's overall education, and knowing the impact its had on the lives of my students is priceless.

Limited resources and limited space are no excuse. Each student in 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade had one piece of their artwork proudly on display for the last weeks of the school year in the elementary library. The evening reception led hundreds of visitors to the art exhibit and gave my students the chance to share their hard work with their loved ones.

The images do not begin to express the energy that existed during the evening celebration but they are great reminder ♥

The Festival of the Elephants

Recently, my 1st graders created elephants paintings influenced by the Elephant Festival celebrated in Jaipur City in Rajasthan, India. It is held on the day of the Holi festival, usually in the month of March. The festival features games such as elephant polo and traditionally has an elephant dance.

The Elephant Festival in Jaipur City, begins with a beautiful procession of bedecked elephants, camels, horses and folk dancers. The owners proudly embellish their elephants with vibrant colors, jhools (saddle cloth) and heavy jewellery. It is quite a treat to see the female elephants wearing anklets, which tinkle and jingle as they walk. One can see people sprinkling 'gulaal' (colored powder) perched on top of the elephant onto watchers as the procession proceeds. Afterwards, the most beautifully decorated elephant is honored with an award.
the celebration. They loved drawing their own ornate designs onto their elephants after taking time as a class to sketch the outline. The main materials used for the project were crayons and black India ink (Mixture: India ink, water, soap). With students finishing at different rates, the students who finished earlier then others were given the opportunity to add glitter and make ornate decorated boarder to frame their elephant painting.
